How to learn with REALIA
Choose the learning path that works best for you!
There are two ways to learn with REALIA. They both include the same content and authentic sources, but you decide how you want to practice English: in small chunks, all together, or mix and match, based on how much time you have.
Option 1: Try the integrated lesson with all English skills combined.
Let us take you through the listening, vocabulary, grammar, and application. Here, all English skills are integrated in an order that slowly builds your comprehension. If you have more time available, try this option.

Option 2: Practice English grammar, vocabulary, listening, and application separately in smaller chunks.
Do you have an English skill that you are interested in improving? Then start here. Each skill is contextualized around the same topic with authentic sources, so you can work on these in any order. Start with one skill that you want to work on whenever you have time. Click or tap on the image or skill to get started!
What is included in each section?
Warm-up and Listening
First, read the summary and complete the warm-up activity. The summary and warm-up will prepare you to think about the topic and introduce some of the important vocabulary words you will hear. This will make it easier to understand the listening.
Next, click on the listening segment. Taking notes while listening can be a good strategy to remember what you heard, but only if it doesn’t interfere with your comprehension. In general, focus on the main idea and key points.
Afterwards, take the quiz to see how much you understood. Did you miss any questions? You can always go back and listen to where each question is located in the audio. Sometimes, you can also slow down the audio, and/or read the transcript if one is available.
Vocabulary and Grammar
Here you will see and practice academic vocabulary and everyday expressions from the listening. First, scroll or tap on the word to see each definition. Then, continue to practice the words in a context that relates to what you heard. Practicing the words in context will help you remember the vocabulary and know how to use it. Finally, take a short quiz to check your understanding.
Continue with the Grammar Focus. In this section, you will first look at a grammar structure from the listening and learn a grammar rule. After that, you will see examples of the grammar structure applied in context. Seeing the grammar in context will help you acquire the structures from the input you receive and help the words sink into your memory and learning. Finally, take a short quiz to check your understanding of the grammar structure.
Critical Thinking and Application
In this part, you will think about the topic and share your own thoughts, ideas, and opinions. Remember there are no wrong answers in this section. This is where you get to apply the topic to your own life and use your writing and critical thinking skills as you express yourself in English.

Finally, go over the “recap” or the final summary, and check back frequently for more English listening, reading, grammar, and vocabulary practice.
